Calling

In the header of a conversation with at least two people, a phone icon appears. Tap it, then “Call”. The “Video” entry is still greyed out — video calls are coming soon.

Answering

An incoming call rings like a normal phone call, showing your contact's name — even while the app is closed. While it rings, Orbit already gets the call ready; after you answer you are connected faster. (Coming with the next update: iPhone 0.9.3, Android 0.9.4.)

During a call

Mute, switch between earpiece and speaker, hang up — all from your own call screen. The speaker icon shows whether the speaker is really on; it follows the output the call reports (new with iPhone 0.8.8 and Android 0.9.0). An icon shows connection quality (Wi-Fi, mobile data, a drop).

Important if your phone was locked

If you answer a call while your screen is locked, you'll briefly need to unlock your device before audio connects. That's not a bug, it's the price of encryption: the audio key lives in your device's locked keychain.
